The Source of Self Worth

At the root of many psychological theories lies a single, spiritual principle. To understand this, we need to examine what psychology views as a primary factor in the development of a psychologically healthy human being: The quality of the relationship between a child and his/her parents.

Do you love your kids because they are cute? Because they are smart? Fun or funny? Talented? Good natured? Probably not. Parents may appreciate or like (or dislike) certain characteristics of their kids but ultimately, they love their kids just because they are their kids.

From a logical perspective, this doesn't make any sense. There needs to be a reason to love. But there doesn't. As parents we intuitively know that that is ridiculous. Our kids deserve to be loved just because they exist.

That love is not psychologically based. It's spiritual. We have an inborn appreciation that every human life is lovable and worthy because it exists.
