There are many different approaches to therapy and even more opinions on which approaches are good and which aren't. Are therapies that focus on changing thoughts and behaviors (such as CBT and DBT) just bandaids that neglect to address the core, deeper issues? Is psychodynamic therapy too focused on the past? Do therapies that focus on emotions neglect the importance of cognitions and skills? Is EMDR too mechanical and missing connection? Do we need to focus more on trauma? Should we stop obsessing about trauma?
This list goes on and on. Proponents of a therapy will tout its benefits vs the perceived flaws of other approaches. I often get calls from people who want EMDR or IFS, two popular modalities. They heard that IFS or EMDR is the "best".
